But in December 1989, disaster struck when the Newcastle Earthquake inflicted catastrophic damage on the club’s home. Almost everything owned by both the Club and the Sub Branch was totally destroyed. This also included all the memorabilia owned by the Newcastle Legion of Vietnam Veterans, the first organised Vietnam Veterans association in Australia.
In March 1990, with the help of the RSL Sub Branch, the Club moved into the current premises at 175 Scott Street and trading recommenced. Over the next 20 years the club survived, but only just. In June 2004 it was decided to make the position of Secretary Manager redundant and the Club’s senior executive members took over responsibility for running the Club with the assistance of senior staff. The Club is still managed this way and we now operate at a profit every year.
