The Begining

It all began almost 100 years ago, in 1917 towards the end of World War 1

During the Great Depression of the 1920’s and 30’s the RSL ran many schemes to support desperate people

But in December 1989, disaster struck

when the Newcastle Earthquake inflicted catastrophic damage on the club’s home

Almost everything owned by both the Club and the Sub Branch was totally destroyed.

. Over the next 20 years the club survived, but only just

In March 1990, with the help of the RSL Sub Branch, the Club moved into the current premises at 175 Scott Street and trading recommenced.

In June 2004 it was decided to make the position of Secretary Manager redundant and the Club’s senior executive members took over responsibility for running the Club with the assistance of senior staff.

Our new name

The Newcastle Diggers Club was registered in 2009

Newcastle Diggers Club

is now being promoted throughout the area with the launch of our website and Facebook page along with other interactive electronic channels

For the many thousands of past and present members, the Newcastle Diggers Club has always been a safe and friendly haven, a hidden jewel in the city. The current Board of Directors, along with the RSL Sub Branch, are committed to continue  providing the best possible venue (not necessarily the biggest) for the community in the central part of the City of Newcastle.
